Another Man Accused Of Molesting Mentally Impaired Mankato Teen

(3/13/11) MANKATO – A Mankato man has been charged with allegedly molesting the same “mentally impaired” teen that was the victim of another Mankato man in charges filed earlier this week.

Bail was set today at $150,000 for 46-year-old Dennis Lee Hogate. He is facing three felony counts of Third Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.

The charges stipulate that Hogate knew or had reason to know the victim was “mentally impaired.”

Assistant Blue Earth County Attorney Mike Hanson confirms the victim in this case is the same boy who was allegedly molested by 46-year-old James Kirlin of Mankato. Kirlin was charged on Monday with multiple counts including Third Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.

Mankato police began investigating Hogate last August when the mother of the 16-year-old boy found suggestive text messages on her son’s phone.

Hogate was on probation out of Rice County for possession of child porn when Mankato police interviewed the victim last December. The boys says Hogate know he liked animals and would take him to a pet store to look at animals and to an Elk farm near Elysian.

Beginning in June 2010, the teen says he’d have sex with Hogate a couple times a week, either in Hogate’s van or a hotel room.

The teen told investigators that his mother told Hogate he was autistic.

Hanson says there is no evidence Kirlin and Hogate knew each other.

Hanson wouldn’t comment on how Kirlin and Hogate first met the victim or if there was a connection.

Hanson, however, did say it wasn’t over the computer.
