Programs to Help Combat Thoughts of Suicide & Depression in Mankato Girls - Registration Still Open

MANKATO (TEC News), February 25 – With higher rates of depression and thoughts of suicide in Mankato area girls, the YWCA has taken strides to combat the issue. Sara Sinnard, owner of Fusion Life and Leadership, LLC. partnered with the YWCA in creating the SURGE program and Girls Inc. “It’s a lot about making an impact in the community and creating social change.” These programs are for girls in grades 6-12 and offer a safe environment to build each other up in many different areas of life. Statistics from 2013 Minnesota Student Survey:
 During the last 12 months, girls reported having SIGNIFICANT problems with:
-Feeling very trapped, lonely, sad, blue, depressed or hopeless:
  • 8th grade girls: 28% (boys: 12%)
  • 9th grade girls: 35% (boys: 21%)
  • 11th grade girls: 34% (boys: 22%)
-sleep trouble
  • 8th grade girls: 37% (boys: 20%)
  • 9th grade girls: 44% (boys: 31%)
  • 11th grade girls: 47% (boys: 29%)
thoughts of suicide:
  • 8th grade girls: 15% (boys: 8%)
  • 9th grade girls: 21% (boys:14%)
  • 11th grade girls: 13% (boys: 9%)
