MANKATO-August 27, 2012-(KMKO)-Two Mankato-area residents face felony drug charges after an arrest Wednesday night. Acting on a tip of a suspicious vehicle parked in a dead end alley, a Mankato police officer located the vehicle and questioned the occupants. Noticing a passenger had a knife in his pocket, the officer conducted a weapons search and found a pill bottle containing methamphetamine. The officer also found two pipes. The passenger, 26-year-old Andrew Derek Layton of North Mankato, and the driver, 32-year-old Jacqueline Schmidt of Mankato, were arrested. They are each charged with felony counts of fifth degree drug possession. Layton has a long criminal history with convictions for drug possession, assaulting a peace officer and DWI.
