Verizon Wireless Center Expansion

Mankato (KMKO)-The Mankato City Council last night debated how to fund a proposed extension of the Verizon Wireless Center.  The city is preparing to apply for a piece of the state's 47.5 million dollars in bonding money.  Mankato would be battling Rochester and St. Cloud for a portion of the funds.  The money would be used to create a $14.5 million addition to the existing complex.  The first part of the plan would be 3.5 million dollars in upgrades to the facility.  At last night's meeting, it appeared the council was in agreement, however Mayor Eric Anderson argued that without state funding, the city would have to find some other way to get the money.  That would put future city councils in a bind financially.  The council last night disagreed and said the project should take place in three phases, making it easier to obtain funding.
