According to court records, three Mankato police officers were dispatched to an address on East Walnut Street for a burglary in progress.

The 9-1-1 caller, Nicholas Rodning was at the house with his girlfriend and says a male had tried breaking in the door earlier and was now in the house.

As police arrived, they could hear two men arguing inside. When officer knocked on the door it was answered by Groll who announced to the rest of the house that the 'cops were here.'

The owner of the home, Amanda Landren, who is Reiniger's daughter, told police she had been out drinking with her mother and Groll and came home because her mother and Groll were fighting. Landgren described Groll as being intoxicated and went home fearing the argument would become physical.

She says it was Groll who broke out the window and crawled through it, knocking over her computer and desk in the process.
