Man Accused Of Assaulting Police Had Threatened Woman In A Domestic
MANKATO (TEC News) -- A Minneapolis man accused of assaulting Mankato police after being taken to a hospital emergency room had allegedly threatened a family member earlier in the evening.
Kyle Mitchell Overson, 36, of Minneapolis has been charged in Blue Earth County Court with felony Terroristic Threats and 4th Degree Assault of a Peace Officer.
Lesser charges of gross misdemeanor Obstruction of the Legal Process and misdemeanor Domestic Assault have also been filed.
Police initially received a call for help from the female relative of Overson at 6:34 p.m.
The woman fled her residence at 640 South Fourth Street to 127 Fulton to safely call 9-1-1.
According to the woman, she told Overson of her plans to have her boyfriend move in with her. She told officer that upset Overson and threatened to "cut her head off and pull out her spine."
The woman told police she became afraid for he life because there was a large butcher knife in his reach lying on the kitcher counter.
Officers responed to the South Fourth Street address and spoke with Overson and he agreed to go with them to the emergency room at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato for his own welfare.
However while walking to the exam room, police say Overson decided he didn't want to be their and tried to exit. When one of the officers said he couldn't leave, Overson grabbed the officer "tightly" by the wrist and forearm and became combative and started to "physically fight" with officers.
4 to 5 police officers and hospital security staff tried to control the 6 foot, 250 pound Overson. Initial attempts to Taser Overson were unsuccessful becaue of the jacket he was wearing. Eventually, Overson was Tased and taken to the floor.
Mankato Police Commander Jeremy Clifton suffered an elbow injury in the scuffle and remained in the emergency room himself to be examined.
