Arrest Made In St. Peter, Gaylord Gang Shooting



GAYLORD (TEC News) -- A Mankato man has been charged with alleged gang-related shootings in both Gaylord and St. Peter.

23-year-old Michael Smith has been connected with firing shots into mobile homes last week in St. Peter and Gaylord.

Charges in Sibley County claim Smith is a member of the Latin Kings and his targets may have both been rival gang members.

Smith was arrested in Mankato early Friday morning and his home in the 100 block of Sixth Street was searched.

Witnesses of the Gaylord shooting described a silver vehicle. The Gaylord victim told police Smith had previously threatened to kill him.

Police in Gaylord also discovered the shooting victims in Gaylord and St. Peter knew each other. Investigators also say shoe and tire tracks found at both shooting locations were a match.

Arlington police found a silver car parked outside a residence there. A witnesses in Arlington placed Smith in the car and that Smith was a gang member.

The car seen in Arlington was found at Smith's residence in Mankato.

Smith was arrested in Mankato with a female and investigators found a loaded shotgun and shotgun slugs and .22 caliber shells. While police were staked out at the home, a woman and a 15-year-old boy left in a car. Their car was stopped and a loaded handgun was seized.

Conditional bail for Smith on Monday in Sibley County Court was set at $75,000.

2) Dangerous Weapons-Drive by Shooting toward person, occupied motor vehicle or occupied building -- Felony
3) Assault-2nd Degree-Dangerous Weapon -- Felony
