ST. PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) today identified the police officer involved in the officer-involved shooting in Mankato on Thursday night.
Also today, the Ramsey County Medical Examiner identified the suspect.
Mankato Officer Timothy Patrick Spellacy responded to a call of a suicidal man at a home on Byron Street in Mankato at 9:28 p.m. Thursday.
Officer Spellacy encountered an armed man outside the residence when he arrived at the home. After several verbal attempts to get the suspect to drop his weapon, the suspect pointed his weapon at officer Spellacy and officer Spellacy fired once, striking the suspect.
The suspect died in route to The Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner has identified the suspect as 31-year-old Jonathan David Hess of Mankato.
Spellacy, a ten-and-a-half year veteran of the Mankato Department of Public Safety, is on standard paid administrative leave.
The BCA is continuing to investigate the shooting.
