MANKATO (TEC News) -- New reports show mixed news in the overall number of cancer cases in Southern Minnesota. The number of cases of melanoma for men in Minnesota has been on the rise for the past year, while numbers from 2011 show the lung cancer mortality rate for males in Blue Earth and Nicollet County were down; the rates for women were about the same. Minnesota's diligence in vaccinating for Human Papillomavirus has lowered the rates for some cancers. Dr. Stephan Thome of Mayo Clinic Health Systems-Mankato comments:

Treatment for established cancer and early detection are why some of the cancer rates are going down.
